If you’re looking for an exciting hog hunting adventure, look no further than Great Southern Outdoors Wildlife Plantation (GSO) in Union Springs, Alabama.
This 6,000-acre hunting plantation, nestled in the heart of Alabama’s Black Belt Region, offers some of the best hunting opportunities in the South, especially when it comes to wild hogs.
I recently had the opportunity to join the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers (AGLOW) for their “Cast & Blast South” event hosted by Alabama Black Belt Adventures. After three days of fishing on Lake Eufaula, we headed to GSO for an unforgettable hog-hunting experience.
Hunter Pritchett, the owner and operator of GSO, shared with us that they take more than 1,500 hogs off the property each year. The special hog hunts run from late February to mid-September, and even during deer season, hunters are allowed to take two hogs each. The best part? Alabama allows baiting and night hunting for these overpopulated nuisance animals.
Our group had varying levels of success during the hunt. Serena Juchnowski, a competitive shooter and experienced hunter, wasted no time putting a 120-pound feral hog down with her Savage 110 Hog Hunter, fitted with a Pulsar Thermion scope. Others, like myself and Dan Amundson, had a bit more trouble. We both missed our shots due to a combination of excitement and forgetting the age-old advice of “aim small, miss small.”
Despite the misses, the experience was unforgettable. Hunter’s prediction that we would miss more hogs than we’d kill during the trip proved true, but that didn’t diminish the thrill of the hunt.
GSO is not just about hog hunting, though. They also adhere to quality deer management practices, maintaining a 2:1 buck-to-doe ratio and limiting buck harvests to a minimum of 8 points outside the ears. Deer hunters can expect to take home an average buck scoring 123-128 on the Boone & Crockett scale, along with one doe and two hogs.
What sets GSO apart is Hunter Pritchett’s dedication to providing quality hog hunting experiences for everyone, regardless of their definition of a “good hunt.” He believes in taking a step back from the influence of social media and celebrating every harvest, no matter the size.
If you’re planning a hunting trip, consider Great Southern Outdoors Wildlife Plantation. With top-notch accommodations, delicious meals prepared by a full-time kitchen staff, and the chance to take home a variety of wild game, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget. And if you harvest all four animals allowed during your hunt, you’ll even receive a FREE hunt for the following season!
As Hunter Pritchett says, “I love it here. I’ll do it until I die.” After experiencing the thrill of the hunt at GSO, it’s easy to see why.
